I've come out on the other side with better understanding after reading this fabulous and insightful book. This is a must read for everyone in a difficult or even a healthy relationship. It has great insight into the brain and its function. We're not all crated equal and that's the point of this book. Chemical imbalance, brain injury, it all has a great effect on our personality and our capacity for dealing with everyday life.
Good read. I highly recommend it!

As a therapist, I try to give clients a way of understanding their thinking patterns and how, as couples, differences in thinking effect their relationships. This book easily and concisely gives the scientific explanations behind many emotional issues. Dr. Amen is open, humorous and 'down to earth' in his approach. He also gives specific, easy to follow prescriptions to alleviate or to work with each problem. I highly recommend this book.The Brain in Love: 12 Lessons to Enhance Your Love Life

THIS BOOK TEACHES THAT VARIOUS CHEMICALS WHETHER IT BE, FOR EXAMPLE, SEROTONIN, ENDORPHINS, OXYTOCIN, VASOPRESSIN, PHENYLETHYLAMINE AND MANY OTHERS DIRECTLY AFFECTS ALL OF OUR BEHAVIOR WHETHER IT BE HAPPINESS, DEPRESSION. MOODINESS OR SIMPLE CONTENTMENT. THESE CHEMICALS REACT IN OUR "FIVE DIFFERENT BRAIN SYSTEMS" (24) KNOWN AS THE DEEP LIMBIC SYSTEM, PREFONTAL CORTEX, ANTERIOR CINGULATE GYRUS, BASAL GANGLIA AND TEMPORAL LOBES. AND BECAUSE DR AMEN IS CONCERNED IN THIS BOOK WITH THE HEALTHY FUNCTION OF OUR LOVE LIFE HE WILL DISCUSS HOW LACK OF VARIOUS CHEMICALS OR TOO MUCH OF VARIOUS CHEMICALS CAN EITHER HELP OR CAUSE DYSFUNCTION IN THE WAYS IN WHICH WE RELATE SEXUALLY. THUS HE SAYS IN THE BEGINNING OF CHAPTER TWO THAT ALL OF THESE "INNER WORKINGS OF THE BRAIN INFLUENCE ALL WE DO SEXUALLY" (23).
DR AMEN HAS DONE A GREAT SERVICE FOR THOSE OF US WHO WONDER WHY SO MANY THINGS WENT WRONG WITH OUR LAST LOVE OR WHY WE STRUGGLE NOW IN OUR MARRIAGES SO MUCH. HE SAYS THIS MAY BE BECAUSE THE BRAIN ITSELF CAN "SABOTAGE" (90) RELATIONSHIPS TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT DIVORCE COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE BRAIN HAD BEEN HEALTHY.
BUT THIS BOOK IS NOT ALL ABOUT STAYING IN LOVE AND SEX. IN HIS 12 LESSONS HE WILL ALSO DISCUSS PMS, ADD, SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND WAYS TO IMPROVE ONES BRAIN HEALTH. THIS IS A TECHNICAL BOOK ON BOTH MEN AND WOMEN AS TO WHY WE LOVE, HOW WE LOVE AND WHAT GOES ON CHEMICALLY WHEN WE LOVE. DID YOU KNOW THAT WHEN A MAN HAS A WANDERING EYE IT MAY HAVE TO DO WITH VASOPRESSION? (67) DID YOU KNOW THAT THE "PRETTIEST" BRAINS DR AMEN HAS SEEN ARE THOSE ON GINGO? THIS IS BECAUSE IT ENHANCES CIRCULATION, MEMORY AND CONCENTRATION. (153) DID YOU KNOW THAT A MAN'S BRAIN NEEDS STIMULATION WHILE A WOMAN'S IS ALWAYS WORKING AND THINKING, THINKING,THINKING? (84).
FINALLY IN APPENDIX A & B DR AMEN OFFERS A SELF QUESTIONNAIRE TO SEE IF BRAIN SCANNING WOULD BE HELPFUL OR NOT FOR THE READER. HE TELLS US WHAT SCANS CAN DO AND NOT DO AND ANSWERS COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT SUCH PROCEEDURES.
ALL IN ALL AFTER FINISHING THIS BOOK I REALIZED IT WAS NOT THE HEART ORGAN ITSELF THAT'S HURT WHEN LOVE TURNS SOUR (ALTHOUGH STRESS PHYSICALLY CAN ATTACK THE HEART ORGAN) BUT IT'S OUR BRAIN THAT'S REALLY EFFECTED. IS IT NOT CORRECT THEN TO SAY INSTEAD OF A BROKEN HEART (THOUGH THAT'S HOW IT'S ALWAYS BEEN DESCRIBED) ONE SUFFERS FROM A BROKEN BRAIN? William S. Downer, Chico,CA..........

This is a must read for everyone...whether you are searching for help for your marriage or you are a clinician working with couples. For the health care professional you might find that missing piece that helps couples find the love and passion they are looking for in life! Dr. Amen draws the connection between a loving relationship and your brain and body health! Simply put destructive relationships are not good for your brain or your heart. What I have learned in applying neuroscience to couples relationship problems for now over a decade...that to not look at the brain is setting a couple up for failure! Buy this book for the health care professionals in your life ...or maybe the newly engaged!!

The Brian in Love is one of the better books on the subject that I have found. It's got great information in it and the author backs it up with expertise. I am very glad I took the time to read this book as it has helped me out with some emotional issues.
